Countdown to Warsaw

Less than two months to go till WSC 2011 in Warsaw.

Norway and Slovakia are confirmed as first-time countries competing, according to organiser Philip Nelkon, of Mattel. Czech Republic and Russia are possible entrants, but Qatar and Guyana are looking less likely, he says.

Another new development will be the holding of an opening ceremony on the Wednesday morning, says Nelkon, which will drop the number of playing rounds one to 34. He had hoped to add more games to this year's finals. But because of media-coverage constraints, it will probably remain at best-of-five, as in previous years, he says.

Meanwhile, the WESPA executive will hold its biannual general meeting on Friday, 14 October — halfway through the tournament. It will be at the Hilton Hotel, the WSC venue, and will start at 9.00pm. Nominations for election to the executive must be sent to the secretary (shcheah@pacific.net.sg) and copied to the chair (edangoor@aol.com) by 1 October, midnight — at local time of nominator.
