ASCI 2017 - Previewing one of the largest tournaments in the Scrabble World
ASTAR Scrabble Challenge International (ASCI) was first organised in the year of 2006 by First Residential College, University of Malaya. Since then, ASCI has been held every year, with a steady growth in the number of participants and fame in the world of Scrabble. It has become one of the world's largest international Collins event, with around 500 participants of all levels and ages in the last session held in April 2016.
This annual international event is organised by a group of university students who are determined to provide a good platform for enthusiastic Scrabble players around the world to compete with one another. It also serves to expose more people, especially the young ones, to this mind-challenging yet fun game.
ASCI 2017 will be held for the 11th time on the 8th and 9th of April. Our theme this year is “A Hundred Tiles, A Million Styles”. Whilst there are only 100 letter tiles in a set of English Scrabble, there are innumerably many ways to play each game – and every player has their own style.
This year, ASCI will provide Wespa ratings to not only Open category players, but to all players in the Under-15 and Under-18 categories as well, with the aim of encouraging young players to participate in more Wespa-rated tournaments.
Goutham Jayaraman was last year's Open Winner at ASCI, with Nigel Richards winning the previous two years.
We expect to have 500 participants, of which it is estimated that there will be 100 in the UNDER-12 category; 150 in the UNDER-15 category; 150 players in the UNDER-18 category and 100 in the OPEN category.
