BOGEYMAN a terrifying evil spirit, typically used to frighten children.
COSTUME a set of clothes of a particular style. Also to dress in such a way.
NIGHTMARE a frightening dream or experience.
HEADSTONE a stone used at the head of a grave.
UNDEAD collective term for technically dead but still animated creatures.

COLCANNON an Irish dish of mashed potatoes and cabbage, seasoned with butter. Lunchtime meal on Hallowe'en.

NECROPHOBIA the fear of death or dead things.
BANSHEE (Irish) A female spirit whose wailing warns of forthcoming death.
SOWENS also sowans, (Gaelic) a kind of oat porridge, a traditional dish for Hallowe'en.
MANGELWURZEL a large beet used for carving lanterns.
DOOKING used in Scotland, same as ducking as in ducking for apples.
PURGATORY a temporary place of suffering, one which lost souls go to before reaching heaven.
