Nigel Triumphs at King's Cup


Nigel Richards of New Zealand successfully defends his title at the 30th King’s Cup played at Bangkok, Thailand on 2-5 July.

This is Richards’ 11th win at this competition, by far the most by any players. With one round in the main part of the competition Nigel needed to beat Komol Panyasophonlert to guarantee a place in the final. He won a nervy game 450 to 392.

Nigel beat Ming Hui Hubert Wee of Singapore in a high scoring best-of-three final 2-0, taking home a cheque of US$10,000. Odette Carmina Rio from the Philippines was third

65 players from all over the world took part, with over 7,000 students playing alongside the International Open Division during the weekend. John Chew's website has full standings of the event, as well as annotated games from the final and rest of the tournament:
